DESCRIPTION: This healthcare comprised the striping out of an existing Coronary Care Unit and re-planning it to provide two new Cardiac Catheter laboratory suites. The works were carried out directly adjacent to two existing Cardiac Catheter Labs, which remained live during the works. Full M&E Services were required and measured to run from the existing Labs through to the new Labs with works carefully planned to minimise down-time. The works were configured to allow a future third Cardiac Catheter Laboratory to be provided at a later date. During Phase 1 all existing clinical areas in the vicinity of the works continued to function. This included the Cardiac Day Ward, relocated Coronary Care Unit and associated accommodation on the first floor and the Recompression Unit and Medical Assessment Unit on the floor beneath the works. Sensitive equipment, e.g. CT Scanning, etc. required necessary measures to avoid affection from vibrations or the like. It was further necessary to arrange access to the ground floor under the proposed Cardiac Catheter labs to carry out certain drainage connections and in routing certain mechanical and electrical services. This work were subject to method statements had to be arranged at a time to suit the service.

Ophthalmology Outpatients Department at South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital, Cork for Health Service Executive

DESCRIPTION: We provided our full Quantity Surveying Services for a new three-storey 1,225 m2 Ophthalmology Outpatients Department at the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital, Cork for the Health Service Executive. The new Outpatients department is a standalone building located adjacent to the main hospital building and alongside the Breast Check Building and City General Hospital at Infirmary Road, Ballintemple, Cork. The existing hospital will remain in operation during the works. The development consists of the following: Demolition of existing boundary walls and fencing bounding the site, demolition of the accessible ramp to Breast Check, construction of new 1-3 storey building with stepped access from Infirmary Road, construction of a new realigned access ramp serving both the new OPD and Breast Check, realignment of the existing footpath and cycleway to provide set down for taxis and public vehicles and all associated site works. The main function of the proposed outpatients service will include specialist consultation, examination and treatment in respect of eye disorders and diseases that do not require day case or inpatient activity and also to cater for patients with eye injuries and other acute problems.

The design of the new unit and outdoor space is bright, comfortable and modern. The rehabilitation unit is well equipped and accessible for those availing of in-patient rehabilitative services.

The development consisted of an extension to the existing Hospital to provide two new theatres, recovery bays and support accommodation linked back to the existing hospital via a link corridor. Over part of the ground floor, an enclosed plant room is to be provided and a separate generator and gas store are located externally. The works also comprise the formation of allocated disabled car parking, entrance ramp and general signage, together with all associated site works and services.Works were procured and administered under the GCC form of contract.

Kerry General Hospital Endoscopy Suite

DESCRIPTION: Lawlor Burns & Associates provided full Quantity Surveying Services for the HSE for the new €5m Endoscopy and Close Observation facilities at Kerry General Hospital, Tralee, Co Kerry.

Works included the refurbishment and extension of an existing former laundry building to provide Endoscopy screening facilities, incorporating a mezzanine for staff facilities and also a roof-lit double height treatment area.  The new extension includes a curved glazed element, with timber clad canopy.

A new single storey Close Observation Unit and Occupational Therapy facilities for the Acute Inpatients Unit was also developed.  The internal fit-out was to a high specification and included atrium, stainless steel fitted kitchen, with anti-ligature design principles.  The schedule of accommodation included Seclusion/De-Escalation Room, Observation Room, Bedrooms & En-suites, Kitchenette, Day & Dining Room, Quiet Room, Office/Staff Room, Clinical Room, Dirty Utility/Sluice Room, Task/Creative Activities Room and a Group Room.

The project involved work adjacent to live hospital environment.  Works were procured and administered under the GCC form of contract.
